FAQS

“Athens Forever” is the name of Athens State University’s bicentennial celebration and endowment campaign. As we approach our bicentennial, we are reminded of our rich history and the many inspiring people who have passed through our historic columns. Despite epidemics, wars, and economic downturns, Athens State has not only endured but has grown into a highly respected university. Our commitment to serve our communities as well as our students is stronger than ever. The foundation was laid in 1822, and Athens Forever begins today!

While details are forthcoming, the Bicentennial Celebration will take place in 2022 as the University celebrates 200 years of growing learners into leaders. A Bicentennial Advisory Committee has been formed to plan the event while ensuring the institution’s values and rich history are celebrated. For more information about the Bicentennial Celebration, please visit the Celebration page or follow Athens Forever on social media.

For complete details about Campaign priorities, please visit the Campaign page.

The silent phase of the Campaign began on September 1, 2017. The Campaign will culminate at the University’s Bicentennial Homecoming celebration in August 2022.

Our goal is to raise $20 million, much of which will be used to endow scholarships and infrastructure. Our history tells us that prior efforts to accomplish this feat were unsuccessful for a variety of reasons. Now is our time! Campaign progress will be tracked on our Campaign page as we approach the public fundraising phase.

For Athens State University to continue thriving and making a difference in the lives of the people of North Alabama and beyond, building a strong financial base is an absolute necessity. Athens Forever is an investment in the long-term future of Athens State. Our history records two such prior efforts, one in 1914 and another in 1925, both led by President Mary Norman Moore McCoy.

These efforts were launched to pay off building debt and establish an endowment. These campaigns struggled during times of world war and economic crisis. In 1975, a decision was made for then-private Athens College to become a state institution. The fiscal realities necessitated the transition – either become a part of the State of Alabama higher education system, or close. Due to the efforts of many, we were able to continue operations, but at a steep cost. Endowments and gifts of real estate were either transferred to other institutions or sold to pay debt.

Ensuring that the University has secured funds which generate income, both for scholarships and critical needs, will provide the cornerstone upon which the foundation for our future will be built. A firm foundation will help us support our commitment to students as we enter our third century as an institution of higher learning. Our ability to remain viable going forward is directly linked to your support. Now is our time – we invite you to help us build this foundation.

95% or more of your donation goes directly to funding student scholarships and critical needs for the University. In some cases, a small portion of your donation (up to 5%) is used to cover administrative expenses associated with campaign overhead and transaction costs.

Of course – we make it easy for you to donate the way that is most convenient for you.

The best way for Athens State University to preserve our public interest is through private support. Our goal is to raise $20 million over the course of the Campaign. Those funds will ensure that Athens State can remain a viable, well-equipped educational partner for learners across North Alabama and beyond. Those funds will allow us to do more than maintain the status quo – they will allow us to continue to achieve the seemingly impossible. With your support, we can build a better tomorrow – that’s what Athens Forever is all about.
