Athens State University is pleased to announce the following Black History Month events as part of the Athens Forever Bicentennial Series.

Black History Month Lunch & Learn – “The Legacy of James Meredith: From Activism to Policy Making”

Huntsville Council Member, Mr. John Meredith, will be speaking at a Black History Month Lunch & Learn on February 3 at 11:30 am in the Athens State University Ballroom. A free lunch will be provided. The event will be free and open to the public.

Huntsville City Council President John Meredith is the son of civil rights icon James H. Meredith, the first African American to enroll and graduate from the previously segregated University of Mississippi.

John’s first career was as a laboratory technologist. While managing a hospital-based clinical lab in Kansas, John participated in a Washington fly-in as a member of the clinical lab manager’s association to lobby against a bill that would eventually have a profound negative impact on the delivery of services to patients. He found the process fascinating and, after securing a master’s degree a year later, rededicated his professional efforts to government.

Deadline to register for the event is Friday, January 28. For more information or to register: https://bit.ly/3GPhwAo

From History to Hip Hop

Soul singer, Jonathan Blanchard, will be headlining an interactive concert/storytelling experience called “From History to Hip Hop” that chronicles the evolution of African American music, from the work song to hip hop. Jonathan uses music and the arts to explore historical events and social issues. “From History to Hip-Hop” showcases an array of American music, starting with songs sung by inbound slaves in the bellies of ships coming across the Atlantic Ocean and ending with the creation and introduction of hip-hop as a genre.

The event will take place on February 25 at 7:00 pm in McCandless Hall and will be free and open to the public.
