Athens State has offered a degree in religion since 1938, providing students the opportunity to explore world religions, theology, ethics in religion, Biblical studies, and culture as it relates to religion. By developing a well-rounded view of religion, students are able to engage with others in a respectful and understanding way. The program allows students to explore their own beliefs as well as to understand the way others form their beliefs based on their own experiences and religions.

Accredited programs in ministry, Biblical studies, and religion were considered for the list from a variety of schools including Christian colleges, public universities, and Catholic institutions. The programs were ranked according to five main criteria: tuition rate, graduation rate, employment rate, alumni salary, and student reviews. Data was drawn from College Scorecard, IPEDS, and Niche.
